✨Exercise: “Teach Me Like I’m 12”
Purpose:
To help you simplify complex topics into clear, relatable language—so you're not overwhelmed by the need to be an expert and can focus on what really matters: understanding and connection.
Step 1: Choose Tomorrow’s Topic
Look at your next lesson. Pick one key concept or term your students will encounter.
Step 2: Set the Scene
Imagine you're explaining this to a curious 12-year-old.
They’re bright, but they don’t know any jargon. Their favourite question is: "But why?"

Step 3: Draft Your Explanation (Max. 2 minutes)
Use these questions to guide you:
- What is it basically about?
- Why should anyone care?
- What’s an everyday comparison I can use?
- How would I explain it to a friend over lunch?
Example:
“Photosynthesis is like cooking, but instead of a kitchen, plants use the sun. They mix sunlight, air, and water to make their own food—just like magic salad factories.”

Step 4: Try It Out Loud
Say your explanation out loud, without notes. If it feels awkward or too long, simplify again. Aim for clarity over cleverness.
💡 Extra Tip: Record it and listen to yourself to make adjustments.
Step 5: Reflect (1 min)
Ask yourself:
Did I understand the concept better by explaining it simply?
Could I use this approach in class tomorrow?
