Explicit vocabulary instruction is the purposeful teaching of tier 2 and 3 words which is essential for developing academic knowledge, reading comprehension and also for supporting effective communication in written and spoken formats. Literacy is the gateway to the curriculum and therefore having a wide range of vocabulary is essential so that students can recognise words and access texts to build their knowledge. In many countries, there is a vocabulary gap, with students from disadvantaged backgrounds having a more limited vocabulary compared to peers who are from non-disadvantaged backgrounds. Therefore, explicit vocabulary instruction helps to close the gap.
